Klaus Stiefermann has been appointed as the new chairperson for the PensionsEurope General Assembly, succeeding Jacques van Dijken.
Stiefermann has been a member of PensionsEurope’s board for 20 years, including four years as its vice chairperson, noted a press release. Since 1999, he has served as managing director of PensionsEurope‘s German member association Arbeitsgemeinschaft für betriebliche Altersversorgung (ABA).
“The Pension Package shows that the cooperation between national associations and PensionsEurope is more important than ever,” said Stiefermann, in the news release. “In the coming weeks, we will carefully examine whether the proposals are suitable to meet the European Commission’s objective.”
In addition to Stiefermann’s appointment, Carolina Fernandez and Ann Verlinden were also elected as vice chairperson.
“Together with Carolina and Ann, I look forward to working with [chief executive officer] Matti Leppälä and his team, as well as with all members of PensionsEurope,” added Stiefermann. “Together, we will advocate for more funded pensions vis-à-vis the EU institutions and in the Member States.”
In parallel to the General Assembly, the European Commission presented its proposals to amend the IORP II Directive, the PEPP Regulation, and the Sustainable Finance Disclosure Regulation (SFDR), as well as its recommendations on pension tracking systems, pension dashboards, and automatic enrolment. According to its press release, with these measures, the Commission aims “to help citizens secure adequate income in retirement by improving access to better and more effective supplementary pensions.”
