The Alberta Investment Management Corporation (AIMCo) has appointed Sandra Lau to a three-year term on its board.
Lau previously worked for the pension fund for nearly 25 years. She first joined AIMCo in 1999, serving in multiple senior roles, including executive vice-president of fixed income and as chief investment officer and head of public investments from 2022 until her retirement in mid-2023.
She is a co-founder of the Edmonton Women in Finance and a member of the group’s steering committee, for which she served as co-chair from its inception in 2018 to 2020.
Effective this month, Lau will take her place on the board alongside former Canadian prime minister Stephen Harper, who is also the board chair; Bob Dhillon, founder, president and chief executive officer of Mainstreet Equity Corp.; Jim Keohane, past-president and CEO of the Healthcare of Ontario Pension Plan; Jason Montemurro, founder and CEO of Montemurro Industries Inc. and Katherine White, Alberta’s Deputy Minister of Treasury Board and Finance.
Lau’s appointment follows the Lieutenant Governor of Alberta’s signing an order in accordance with the Alberta Investment Management Corporation Act, outlining that the Board of Directors is responsible for overseeing the management of the business and affairs of AIMCo, noted a press release on the pension fund’s website.
“Guided by this mandate, the Board sets the strategic direction of the Corporation and oversees the development and implementation of policies and procedures that govern the day-to-day conduct of AIMCo’s business,” said the release, which noted all directors are appointed to the Board by the Lieutenant Governor in Council and are fully independent of management.
“Sandra Lau brings both exceptional skills and a unique perspective, and I am pleased to welcome her back to AIMCo as a member of the Board,” said Harper. “The Board is certain AIMCo and its clients will benefit from her extensive knowledge of the organization, her proven investment and risk management acumen, and her boardroom experience.”
