ALTSCHI is developed and led by the CFA Society Chicago, the CAIA Association and Markets Group. With their guidance and oversight, this one-day event will provide participants with an educationally focused agenda and will feature leading practitioners from the fields of private equity, venture capital, real estate, hedge funds, infrastructure and other sectors of the alternative investment market.

PAST SPEAKERS


John P. Calamos Sr, Founder, Chairman and Global Chief Investment Officer, Calamos Investments

Mr. Calamos, Sr. is Chairman and Global CIO of Calamos Investments, a firm he founded in 1977. With origins as an institutional convertible bond manager, the firm has grown into a global asset management firm. Mr. Calamos is often quoted as an authority on risk-managed investment strategies, markets and the economy. He received his B.A. in Economics and an M.B.A. in Finance from the Illinois Institute of Technology. He joined the United States Air Force after graduation and served as a combat pilot during the Vietnam War.


George Mussalli, CFA, Chief Investment Officer, Head of Research, Equity, Panagora Asset Management

Mr. Mussalli is responsible for oversight of the firm’s Dynamic, Stock Selector, and Diversified Arbitrage strategies, as well as the Equity team’s Data Infrastructure, Portfolio Construction, and Trading teams. He is also a member of the firm’s Investment, Operating, and Directors Committees. His work focuses on combining fundamental insights with sophisticated quantitative techniques to develop proprietary models designed to analyze companies across many dimensions. The research he has conducted also led to the founding of the firm’s Diversified Arbitrage hedge fund strategy in 2010.


Chris Walvoord, Head of Hedge Fund Research, Aon Hewitt

Mr. Walvoord leads Aon Hewitt’s Global Liquid Alternatives Team within Global Investment Management. He oversees research and investment activities across a variety of liquid alternative strategies. His group is responsible for researching, recommending and monitoring managers for both advisory and delegated client portfolios. Prior to joining AHIC in 2016, Chris was a portfolio manager and a member of the investment committee at William Blair. Chris was the lead PM for the custom hedge fund business at Blair which managed client specific portfolios for large institutional clients.


Benjamin Patzik, CFA, CPA, Vice President, Head of Portfolio Strategy & Solutions, Segal Macro Advisors

Mr. Patzik currently serves as Vice President, Head of Portfolio Strategy & Solutions in Segal Marco Advisors’ Chicago office. In this role, he is charged with effectuating the firm’s research agenda across strategies and asset classes. Mr. Patzik oversees new product development initiatives, designs and structures investment optimization strategies for existing and prospective client portfolios, and guides consultant investment strategy. Mr. Patzik also conducts ongoing analysis of individual managers and coordinates all aspects of the investment due-diligence process, with an emphasis on alternative strategies. He is a member of Segal Marco’s Investment Committee and Alpha Manager Review Committee. Mr. Patzik previously served as an Investment Analyst at GCM Grosvenor specializing in hedge fund manager selection across multiple strategies. He is a Registered Certified Public Accountant, a CFA Charterholder, and a Member of the CFA Institute of Chicago.


Richard Sandor (Ph.D., Dr. sc. h. c.) Chairman , Chief Executive Officer, American Financial Exchange (AFX)

Mr. Sandor is Chairman and CEO of the American Financial Exchange (AFX), an electronic exchange for direct interbank/financial institution lending and borrowing. He is also the CEO of Environmental Financial Products, which specializes in inventing, designing and developing new financial markets. Dr. Sandor is currently the Aaron Director Lecturer in Law and Economics at the University of Chicago Law School and an Honorary Professor at the University of Hong Kong. He was honored by the City of Chicago for his universal recognition as the “father of financial futures”.


Adam Blitz, CFA, Chief Executive Officer, Chief Investment Officer, Evanston Capital Management

Mr. Blitz is the Chief Executive Officer, Chief Investment Officer, a Principal, a member of the Investment Committee of Evanston Capital Management, LLC, and a member of its Board of Managers. He has over fifteen years of institutional investment management experience with an emphasis in quantitative analysis, trading and risk management. Prior to helping establish Evanston Capital Management, Mr. Blitz worked in the Prime Brokerage area at Goldman, Sachs & Co., where he was responsible for developing, selling, and managing funding and financing products to offer to hedge funds. He also worked closely with the risk management group within Prime Brokerage, which is responsible for determining the appropriate amount of leverage to extend to hedge funds from both a regulatory and risk-based perspective. Before joining Goldman Sachs, Mr. Blitz was the Head Trader at AQR Capital Management, a multi-strategy quantitative investment manager. At AQR, Mr. Blitz was responsible for implementing all of AQR’s market-neutral strategies and traded a wide variety of financial instruments, including equities, bonds, currencies, futures, and swaps. Mr. Blitz also assisted in risk management and strategy research at AQR, including extensive modeling and analysis of strategy and fund-level volatilities and correlations. Mr. Blitz also was previously employed in the Asset Management Division at Goldman Sachs, where he was a member of the Quantitative Research group. Mr. Blitz received his B.S. in Economics from the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School. He serves as a member of the Board of Advisors of Northwestern University’s School of Education and Social Policy, is a CFA charterholder, and is a member of the CFA Institute and the CFA Society of Chicago.


Angela Miller-May, Chief Investment Officer, Chicago Teachers' Pension Fund

Ms. Miller-May serves as Chicago Teachers' Pension Fund's Director of Investments. Angela Miller-May previously held the position of Portfolio Manager-Alternatives at the Chicago Teachers' Pension Fund (CTPF). Ms. Miller-May joined Chicago Teachers' Pension Fund in 2010 and was responsible for monitoring alternative (real estate, infrastructure, private equity and hedge fund-of-funds) investment managers to ensure contractual, compliance, fiduciary and investment responsibilities to the Fund are met. She focused on initial due diligence and maintenance due diligence as well as overseeing and analyzing all alternative valuations. She actively evaluated and reconciled accounting and performance information provided by the Investment Managers, Custodians and Consultants.


Promod Haque, Senior Managing Partner, Norwest Venture Partners

Mr. Haque has 28 years of experience in the venture capital industry and currently serves as senior managing partner at Norwest Venture Partners. Promod joined Norwest in 1990, and has invested in more than 70 companies since he began his venture career. His investments have been worth more than $40B in aggregate exit value to date, as 25 of his portfolio companies have gone public and 37 have been acquired (or have gone public and been acquired). In 2014 and 2016, Forbes recognized Promod as a “Hall of Fame” investor. 2017 marked Promod’s thirteenth appearance on the annual Forbes Midas List, including 2004, when he was ranked the #1 venture capitalist based on performance over the previous decade. In 2006, Promod was presented with a Global Leadership award from NASSCOM, and he was honored with the 2011 SV Forum Visionary Award based on his outstanding achievements and contributions to the technology industry.


Jim Bethea, CFA, CAIA, Vice President & Chief Investment Officer, The University of Iowa Center for Advancement

Jim Bethea serves as Vice President and Chief Investment Officer for The University of Iowa Center for Advancement. Before joining the Center for Advancement, he worked in investment manager research at RVK and Touchstone Investments. He has also worked on mergers, acquisitions, and leveraged buyouts at Mystic Capital and as a project engineer for Bridgestone. He received his B.S. degree in mechanical engineering from The Ohio State University and his M.B.A. from Case Western Reserve University. He is a CFA and CAIA charterholder and is on the Investment Advisory Committee for the University of Iowa’s Henry Fund.


Mike Sebastian, Senior Partner, Global Chief Investment Officer, Aon

Mike is the Global Chief Investment Officer for Aon's investment practice. In that capacity he is responsible for the teams who are investing clients’ assets on a daily basis, and the investment manager research and due diligence that supports those investment activities. Mike previously headed up the Investment team at the Aon Center for Innovation and Analytics (ACIA), Singapore and served on the ACIA Senior Leadership Team. He has contributed to the firm's thought leadership as well as working in client service and other roles at Aon. Mike has authored and co-authored a number of research articles published in the Journal of Portfolio Management, the Journal of Private Equity, the Journal of Investing, and the Alternative Investment Analyst Review, two of which received Bernstein Fabozzi/Jacobs Levy awards for outstanding research. Mike has served as an adjunct faculty member at Northwestern University and as the chair of the Investment Sub-Committee for the American Club of Singapore, and is an Associate Editor of the Journal of Behavioral and Experimental Finance. Mike holds B.S. and M.S. degrees in finance from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.


Patrick C. Lynch, CFA, Founding Partner and President, Chicago Equity Partners, LLC

Mr. Lynch is responsible for ongoing management and strategy of Chicago Equity Partners, LLC, a multi-asset class investment platform with approximately $6 billion in assets under management. Chicago Equity delivers fundamentally-oriented investment solutions to sophisticated institutional investors, with an emphasis on consistent performance and exceptional client service. Mr. Lynch earned a bachelor’s degree in finance from Loyola University Chicago and an MBA from DePaul University. He holds the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation. He is a member of the Economic Club of Chicago, the Commercial Club of Chicago, the CFA Society of Chicago, and the CFA Institute. Additionally, he is a Loyola University Trustee and a Loyola Business School Advisory council member.


Donald Luskin, Founder, Chief Investment Officer, Trend Macrolytics

Prior to founding Trend Macrolytics, Don was vice chairman and co-chief investment officer of Barclays Global Investors. The firm was acquired by Blackrock in 2009. At Barclays, Don invented and patented target-date mutual funds, which have since become a standard for retirement investment. He pioneered sector ETF's, creating the fund family now known as i-Shares. Don was the inventor of the POSIT ECN, and founder of Investment Technology Group. Don has been an economic advisor to two presidential candidates including the late John McCain, and has briefed the President in the White House. He contributes frequently to the op-ed page of the Wall Street Journal, and appears regularly on Fox Business.


Kenneth Heinz, President, Hedge Fund Research

Mr. Heinz, CFA is the President of Hedge Fund Research, Inc. (HFR) and is a leading authority on the global hedge fund industry. Mr. Heinz manages HFR’s industry leading hedge fund index business, as well as overseeing HFR’s hedge fund database and analysis franchises. Mr. Heinz has provided specialized consulting services to the industry’s most significant institutional investors globally and has worked directly with thousands of managers, including many of the industry’s most influential firms.


Daniel Dolan, Co-Founder , Partner, Dolan Mceniry Capital Management

Mr. Dolan founded Dolan McEniry in 1997 following a 16 year career in the financial services industry. Daniel previously worked with Morgan Stanley and Salomon Brothers after receiving a B.A. from Lake Forest College in 1980. Daniel serves as a member of the Board of Trustees of Lake Forest College. He also serves on the Board of Directors for the Shirley Ryan Ability Lab, US Squash and MetroSquash. At Dolan McEniry, Daniel focuses on portfolio management, security selection, and securities trading. Also, Daniel is responsible for client relations, new business development, and the overall administrative management of the firm.


Matthew Roszak, Chairman & Co-Founder, Bloq

Mr. Roszak is a leading blockchain investor, entrepreneur and advocate. Matthew is chairman and co-founder of Bloq, a blockchain technology company — and the creator of Metronome, a next generation cryptocurrency. Matthew is also founding partner of Tally Capital, a private investment firm focused on cryptocurrencies and blockchain-enabled technology, with a portfolio of market leading companies including: Binance, Block.One, Civic, Genaro, Hilo, Messari, Orchid, Polymath, Rivetz, SpaceChain, tZERO and Qtum. Matthew serves as chairman of the Chamber of Digital Commerce, the world’s largest trade association representing the blockchain industry — and the founder of the Token Alliance, an industry-led initiative developing best practices and standards for the responsible issuance of tokens.
