CalSTRS promotes April Wilcox to senior investment director

By Muskan Arora

The $358.4B California State Teachers’ Retirement System promoted April Wilcox as senior investment director of strategic management and operations.

Wilcox will report to Scott Chan, the chief investment officer at the pension plan.

“I look forward to building on our momentum with technological transformation and driving innovation across our investment divisions,” said Wilcox, in a press release.

In her new role, she will be responsible for implementing the investment branch’s vision, strategic goals, and objectives; providing senior leadership and strategic direction over investment servicing and business operational management divisions; overseeing business and operational risks; and collaborating across the investment branch.

“April and her team are the backbone of CalSTRS investments, and she is the right person to lead our future evolution in key areas such as the buildout of the investment team’s approach to technology,” said Chan, in the press release. “Her experience and knowledge across the breadth of our portfolio and investment strategies are invaluable.”

She joined the pension plan in 2004 as a senior accounting officer, moving up the ladder to take on various roles including investment officer for fixed income and investment operations and director of investment operations.

For the past five years, April has served as the director of investment services and has been responsible for managing CalSTRS’ investment portfolio, alongside focusing on business and operational management for the pension plan.

She earned a Bachelor of Science in finance from California State University, Sacramento, as well as an executive certificate in management and leadership from MIT Sloan.
