NYS Common Retirement Fund returns 5.84% in FY2024-25 amid domestic, geopolitical uncertainty

The fund ended the year with an estimated value of $272.8B, up from $267.4B as of Mar. 31, 2024.

The NYS Common Retirement Fund returned 5.78% for the fiscal year end Mar. 31, 2025, despite market volatility in the first half of the year stemming from unpredictability on the domestic and geopolitical fronts.

“The state pension fund’s sound management and long-term approach has weathered previous market ups and downs and remains well-positioned to provide the retirement benefits state and local government employees have earned,” said New York State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli, in a press release.

Indeed, the fund ended the year with an estimated value of $272.8B, up from $267.4B as of Mar. 31, 2024. Though the return underperformed compared to the year prior (11.56%), it outperformed its long-term expected rate of return (5.9%) over five- and 10-year periods (10.6% and 7.74%, respectively).

As of Mar. 31, 2025, more than a third (39.2%) of the fund’s assets were invested in publicly traded equities. The remaining assets by allocation comprised of cash, bonds, and mortgages (23%), private equity (14.9%), real estate and real assets (14.1%) and credit, absolute-return strategies, and opportunistic alternatives (8.8%).
