The $65.8B New Mexico State Investment Council tapped Ashby Monk, a senior research engineer at Stanford University, to conduct the search for the sovereign wealth fund’s new chief investment officer and deputy state investment officer.
Jon Clark, New Mexico’s state investment officer, announced Monk’s hiring during a recent board meeting, noting he also serves as executive and research director of the Stanford Research Initiative on Long-Term Investing. His research primarily focuses on the design and governance of pension and sovereign wealth funds.
During the council’s monthly meeting, Clark highlighted Monk’s experience, adding that he brings “specific deep expertise in the area of sovereign wealth funds.”
The new CIO will succeed Robert “Vince” Smith who announced his retirement earlier this month following a cancer diagnosis.
Smith had joined the sovereign wealth fund in 2010, succeeding Adam Levine, who had left the plan to join the $165B Texas Treasury Safekeeping Trust Co.
