The $584B California Public Employees’ Retirement System (CalPERS) has selected Chanin Kelly-Rae Consulting as its first diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) consultant.
The pension fund approved the hire during a recent Board of Administration meeting.
“We are deeply honored to support in advancing its DEI framework and initiatives — helping shape a more equitable, inclusive future for one of the most influential public institutions in the nation,” the consultant said in a LinkedIn post.
Chanin Kelly-Rae Consulting was selected from a group that included the Nova Collective, BCT Partners, Ferdman Consulting, Kerry Mitchell Brown, and Sage 71.
CalPERS launched its DEI Advisory Council in 2020, tasked with supporting the pension system’s strategic goals and tactical initiatives, among other priorities. In 2021, the system developed a new DEI framework designed to integrate DEI into all aspects of the organization. The framework outlines five priority areas: investments, supplier identity, health equity, culture, and talent management.
According to meeting materials, the consultant will help CalPERS identify gaps in its DEI policies and programs and identify opportunities for additional success. Chanin Kelly-Rae will also conduct research and provide market assessments and comparisons of DEI frameworks used by leading private, nonprofit, and public sector organizations.
“This recognition represents years of dedication to meaningful, data-driven, and justice-centered DEIB work,” the consulting firm said in the LinkedIn post. “It also reflects the collective brilliance of the many talented firms considered for this opportunity — we celebrate and salute you all. Our team is beyond proud to bring our expertise, values, and unwavering commitment to this historic partnership.”
CalPERS’ contract with the consultant is set to begin Jan. 1 and expire on Dec. 31, 2028. The pension fund has the option to extend the mandate by two years.
