By Muskan Arora

The $225.8bn Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan Board promoted Mabel Wong to chief financial officer.

Wong joined the pension fund in January 2023, as a senior managing director for the system’s enterprise planning and finance operations division.

Wong will be reporting to Jo Taylor, president and CEO of the pension fund.

She was serving as an interim CFO, following the departure of Tim Deacon, former CFO.

In the current role, Wong will oversee the system’s finance activities globally, supporting informed financial decision-making, risk management and sound governance.

She will be responsible for financial management and reporting, valuation, risk analytics and model valuations, financial operations and strategic finance initiatives.

She is also currently a bord member at UNICEF Canada.

Prior to joining the pension plan, Wong worked as an advisor at Power Sustainable Lios for almost two years.

Before that, she served as managing director and CFO at Brookfield Asset Management’s Reinsurance Group. She joined Brookfield in 2007, as the director of finance.

In the first quarter, the pension fund promoted Robert Sturgeon to the role of senior managing director for its global investment strategy; Steve Saldanha was named the executive managing director for its total fund management and Bernard Grzinic was appointed as the executive managing director for its capital market investments.

Ontario Teachers reports a net six- and twelve-month net return of 4.2%. The five- and 10-year annualized net returns were 6.7% and 7.3%, respectively.
