The Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan has appointed Salman Bashir as managing director of strategic asset allocation — total fund management.
In his new role, Bashir will continue to oversee portfolio construction and quantitative research, guiding recommendations on OTPP’s long-term factor balance, risk-taking, and total portfolio framework for the chief investment officer, chief executive officer, and the board, according to his LinkedIn profile. His team will also provide portfolio construction advisory support to other investment teams.
Bashir has been with the Canadian “Maple Eight” pension fund for more than a decade, advancing through several senior roles, including senior principal of strategy and risk, where he led a team developing portfolio analytics and data science initiatives; senior principal and head of total fund insights and analytics; senior principal in the portfolio strategy group — total fund management; and most recently, director of strategic asset allocation — total fund management. In that role, he was responsible for portfolio construction models, factor models for public and private asset classes, total fund framework design (including inflation-linked liability hedging, optimal leverage, liquidity, and risk), and communicating insights to the CIO, CEO, and board as part of Ontario Teachers’ investment planning and research agenda.
