Key Discussion Topics

2020 MACRO OUTLOOK AND GLOBAL ASSET ALLOCATION

The 2008 global financial crisis decided the socioeconomic race to the bottom, crowning one winner—anti-globalism—and exposing neoliberalism as its dirtiest cheater.  Now, on the eve of another contentious presidential election, the novel coronavirus has infected America with a triple crisis, exposing its public health, ecological integration, and economic order as fragile and the opposite of life-affirming.  Could COVID-19 bring the long-theorized Great Reset of capitalism to bear? Our opening session will critique and contrast institutional asset allocation before and after the worldwide pandemic.

INVESTING IN RENEWABLE ENERGY

The topic of infrastructure, in particular green infrastructure, has steadily been gaining traction on the regulatory front as well as within the institutional investment community. Fundamental drivers underpinned by global political agreements shed light on a significant global investment opportunity. As a result, green infrastructure has become a major investment theme with increasing importance for both the short and long term. Renewable energies, water infrastructure in supply and sanitation, green buildings, and sustainable transport will experience enormous investment needs. Identifying compelling opportunities in these growth markets should offer attractive returns and satisfy growing investor demand.

GLOBAL FIXED INCOME: RISKS AND OPPORTUNITIES

For a global asset class totaling more than $100 trillion, fixed income is a capital market instrument often neglected.  The historic stock surge of 2010-2019 overshadowed solid but unspectacular bond performance.  The onset of COVID-19 and subsequent panic-stricken selloff challenged the perception of the bond market as a safe haven, but offered exceptional opportunistic merchandise in corporate credit, government debt, even exchange traded fixed income.  Our panel will show how the difference between fixed income risk and opportunity is simply a matter of tolerance.

WHAT'S NEXT FOR GLOBAL EQUITY MARKETS

The decade following the global financial crisis capped not just the longest-running—but the most remarkable—bull market ever recorded.  Between 2009 to 2019, the Dow Jones Industrial Average reached 28,000, Netflix posted a 4,000 percent return and—in a historic first—the U.S. ended a decade without entering economic recession.  Though a market correction or bearish reversal could have been priced-in, the novel coronavirus outbreak has proven to be a global risk multiplier without precedent.  Our equity panel will measure the true cost of the 2020 stock market crash and ask if COVID-19 reduced the indexing revolution to another too-big-to-fail enterprise.

AN EVOLVING WORLD FOR ALTERNATIVE CREDIT

Following the global financial crisis, a low-rate environment has forced investors to rethink asset allocation in order to meet their portfolio objectives. This prolonged market condition has put particular stress on traditional credit and fixed income instruments that have historically played a critical role in portfolios. Further, hedge fund strategies employed to provide diversification and non-correlation have struggled to deliver. These dynamics are leading investors to increasingly embrace alternative credit strategies that look to take advantage of more complex, and often less liquid, opportunities. The panelists will seek to define the various segments within alternative credit, to highlight several key characteristics of these strategies, and to discuss real-time examples of opportunities in today’s market.

PASSIVE VS. ACTIVE MANAGEMENT OPPORTUNITIES

The debate around active vs. passive investment strategies continues unabated. In the past year we have seen passive fund assets overtake active for the first time in history. With the quality being a key component of a successful operation, panelists will discuss the areas of opportunity as it relates to passive management vs. active management.

ESG NOW AND THEN: RECENT TRENDS IN IMPLEMENTATION

The ESG discussion is evolving rapidly, as are techniques for incorporating ESG analytics and factors into the portfolio construction process. This panel will explore how investors are assessing ESG’s longer-term material impacts and how they are positioning their portfolios to avoid these potential risks. The panel will also examine specific strategies investors are using to address and integrate ESG issues in systematic value and multi-factor-based frameworks.

DIVERSIFY THE DIVERSIFIER: BUILDING AN ALL SEASON REAL ASSETS PORTFOLIO

In the face of volatile equity markets and inadequate bond yields, the investment management industry is seeing investor interest in real assets spike. As they have long done with fixed income and equities, investors are now building larger and more diversified real assets allocations by adding global and sector exposure – including infrastructure, maritime and international real estate – to the real asset mainstay, domestic core real estate. In this session, we build a broader income-oriented real assets allocation designed to deliver high yield with downside protection.

GLOBAL MULTI-SECTOR CREDIT FUNDS TO NAVIGATE LATE CYCLE OPPORTUNITIES AND RISKS

The bull market can’t go on forever. How might allocators evaluate the benefits and drawbacks of multi-sector approaches today relative to investments within single strategies? In this session, an allocator interviews a multi-sector PM on his experiences investing across the breadth of global asset classes through various market cycles.
