Apollo Sports Capital has acquired a minority stake in Wrexham AFC, joining the club’s high-profile ownership group as it continues its rapid ascent through English football. The investment, announced Monday without disclosed terms, will support the redevelopment of Wrexham’s historic stadium and broader infrastructure projects around the Welsh city, which has gained global visibility since Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney bought the club in 2021 and produced a hit docuseries about its revival.
Founded in 1864, Wrexham has secured three straight promotions to reach the Championship for the first time since 1982 and currently sits mid-table. The owners said their ambition remains building a sustainable club rooted in the local community while pursuing a long-term push toward the Premier League, adding that Apollo shared their vision and ambition. The sale follows a previous minority stake deal with another U.S. investor, and comes as Apollo expands its sports portfolio, including its recent move to acquire a majority stake in Atlético Madrid.
