The Private Wealth Latin America and the Caribbean Forum in Miami is the leading meeting for family offices, wealth managers, RIAs, private banks and asset managers in the region and one of the flagship meetings of our private wealth series. In our sixth year, we will look to take conversations deeper and raise the level on our previous forum’s discussions.

We have put together the forum to address the needs of family members, family offices and industry leading intermediaries and will continue to strive to provide the most updated intelligence on private wealth management in Latin America.

KEYNOTE SPEAKERS

Eduardo Frei Ruiz–Tagle, President, Republic of Chile (1994-2000)

Eduardo Frei Ruiz-Tagle is a Chilean politician and civil engineer who was President of Chile from 1994 to 2000. He was also a Senator, fulfilling the role of President of the Senate from 2006 to 2008. His father was Eduardo Frei Montalva who was President of Chile from 1964 to 1970. Frei's presidency was notable in making improvements in health and education as well as reducing poverty. Following the end of his presidency, Frei assumed, as a former President, a seat as senator-for-life in Congress. He is currently a member of the Executive Committee of Club de Madrid and takes part as permanent lecturer in the Annual Assembly of Governors of the Inter-American Development Bank. As the former President of Chile, Eduardo Frei Ruiz-Tagle offers a unique perspective into the global world of international affairs and global economics. He uses his varied expertise to advise decision makers on future trends in an informative and thought provoking manner.


Jamie Dinan, Founder, Chairman & Co-Chief Executive Officer, York Capital Management

Jamie founded York Capital Management in September 1991 and is the Chairman, Co-Chief Executive Officer and a Managing Partner of the Firm. Jamie is a Co-Portfolio Manager of the York Multi-Strategy, York Credit Opportunities, York Event-Driven UCITS funds, York Sub-Advised ’40 Act Strategy, and Portfolio Manager of the York Total Return funds and is the Chair of the Firm’s Executive Committee. From 1985 to 1991, he worked at Kellner, DiLeo & Co., where he became a General Partner and was responsible for investing in risk arbitrage and special situation investments. From 1981 to 1983, Jamie was a member of the investment banking group at Donaldson, Lufkin & Jenrette, Inc. Jamie is currently the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Museum of the City of New York, and a member of the Board of Directors of the Hospital for Special Surgery, the Board of Directors of the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, Harvard Business School’s Board of Dean’s Advisors, the Board of Trustees of the University of Pennsylvania and The Wharton Board of Overseers at the University of Pennsylvania. Jamie received a B.S. in Economics from The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania and an M.B.A. from Harvard Business School.


Carlos Pareja, Ambassador to the United States, the Republic of Peru 

Carlos Jose Pareja Rios became ambassador of Peru to the United States on Sept. 16, 2016, having previously served as director-general of Peru’s Directorate General of Africa, Middle East and Gulf Countries since 2015 and, before that, director-general of Peru’s Directorate General of America from 2014 to 2015. Ambassador Pareja also served as Peru’s ambassador to Chile (2009-14); chief of state protocol in Lima (2006-09); ambassador to Switzerland (2003-05); ambassador to Spain (2000-02); and national director of the Directorate General of Sovereignty and Border Development, participating in peace negotiations with Ecuador, among other duties (1998-2000). In addition, he was chief of cabinet for the vice minister of foreign affairs (1997-98); minister-counselor in the Embassy of Peru in Santiago (1993-97); director for South American affairs in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (1990-93); and political counselor at the Peruvian Embassy in Washington, D.C. (1984-90).


Francis Suarez, Mayor, City of Miami

Francis X. Suarez serves the City of Miami as Mayor, working diligently to raise the standards of the community where he was born and raised. He currently also serves as Vice-Chair of the Miami- Dade Transportation Planning Organization, tasked with approving federally required plans and transportation policies, and as President of the Miami-Dade County League of Cities. Commissioner Suarez graduated from Florida International University. He went on to law school at the University of Florida Frederic G. Levin College of Law, graduating cum laude. Prior to running for public office, Commissioner Suarez founded a successful real estate firm. He is also a practicing attorney with the law firm of Carlton Fields specializing in real-estate and corporate transactions.


Lawrence Johnson, Chief Executive Officer, Fogo de Chão

Larry Johnson is CEO of Fogo de Chão. He previously worked for international law firm Baker & McKenzie, LLP in Chicago and Rio de Janeiro, before eventually becoming a founding partner of the firm’s Dallas office. In 1996 Larry became Fogo de Chão’s Corporate Counsel, and was appointed CEO in 2007. Together with the founders, Larry created the corporate tax, immigration, and supplier structure necessary to build Fogo into a global company. Under his CEO leadership Fogo launched a successful IPO in 2015 and has grown from 11 restaurants in 2007 to 48 locations across four countries.


Ben Appen, Founding Partner, Magnitude Capital

Ben Appen is a Founding Partner, Chief Executive Officer, and co-chairs the firm’s Investment Committee.  Mr. Appen was previously a Senior Vice President at D. E. Shaw & Co., where he co-founded and managed the firm’s fund of funds business. Mr. Appen is the vice chair of the board of directors of Neighborhood Trust Financial Partners, serves on the board of directors for Innovations for Poverty Action, and is a trustee of the Citizens Budget Commission.  In 1992, Mr. Appen graduated magna cum laude with a B.A. in political science from Columbia University.


John Feely, Ambassador to the Republic of Panama, United States Department of State (2015-2018)

John Feeley is a former U.S. ambassador who runs Gotham Lights LLC, a Miami and Washington, DC-based consultancy focused on the commercial, cultural, and socio-political integration of the Americas. A skilled negotiator, organizational leader and cross-cultural communicator, Ambassador Feeley collaborates with private sector and not-for-profit clients who seek to employ negotiation and consultation as their default instruments for conflict resolution on an institutional and individual basis. During a 28-year State Department career, he served as Ambassador of the U.S. Embassy in Panama, Deputy Chief of Mission and Chargé d’affaires in Mexico City, and Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for the Bureau of Western Hemisphere Affairs. He is a political consultant for Univision and has appeared on CNN, BBC, CBC, National Public Radio , PBS and in The Washington Post, The New York Times, and The New Yorker. Ambassador Feeley is a board member of the Immigration Partnership and Coalition Fund, a Miami-based, non-profit organization that supports immigration reform that makes business sense and is consonant with American values.
