ALTSSEA is developed and led by CFA Society Seattle, CAIA Association, and the SAIA Association. With their guidance and oversight, this one-day event will provide participants with an educationally focused agenda and will feature leading practitioners from the fields of private equity, venture capital, real estate, hedge funds, cryptocurrency, artificial intelligence and other sectors of the alternative investment market.

KEYNOTE SPEAKERS

Tim Draper, Founder & Managing Partner, Draper Associates

Tim Draper is a top global venture capitalist, having founded Draper Associates, DFJ and the Draper Venture Network. The firms’ investments include Coinbase, Robinhood, TwitchTV, Skype, Tesla, Baidu, Focus Media, YeePay, Hotmail, SolarCity, Athenahealth, Box, SpaceX, and many others.

He is a leading spokesperson for Bitcoin, Blockchain, ICOs and cryptocurrencies, having led investments in the companies that would issue two of the largest ICO’s: Tezos and Bancor. He created viral marketing, instrumental to the successes of Hotmail and Skype and other applications, particularly effective for mail and communications applications. He is regularly featured on all major networks as a proponent for entrepreneurship, innovative governance, free markets and Bitcoin, and has received various awards and honors including the World Entrepreneurship Forum’s “Entrepreneur of the World,” and is listed as one of the top 100 most powerful people in finance by Worth Magazine, the top 20 most influential people in Crypto by CryptoWeekly, #1 most networked VC by AlwaysOn, #7 on the Forbes Midas List, and #48 most influential Harvard Alum.

In promoting entrepreneurship, he created Draper University of Heroes, to help extraordinary people accomplish their life missions. He authored a popular entrepreneur’s textbook called, “How to be The Startup Hero” and created a crowdsourced TV series with Sony Network called “Meet The Drapers,” where viewers can invest in participants. ABC Family created another show, “StartupU,” around the activity and students of Draper University. He started Innovate Your State, a non-profit dedicated to crowdsource innovation in government, and BizWorld, a non-profit that teaches young children how business and entrepreneurship work. He has served on the California State Board of Education and received the “Toqueville” Award for freedom from the Independent Institute.


Martin Selig, Owner, Martin Selig Real Estate

As one of Seattle's largest commercial real estate developers, Martin Selig has been involved in real estate development for well over 50 years. During that time, he has developed close to 8 million square feet of first-class mid to high-rise office space, representing approximately one third of the downtown Seattle office market. His management company, MSRE Management, LLC, employs over 200 people and oversees all aspects of the planning, construction, leasing and property management for his real estate holdings. Today with over 5 million square feet under management, he is expanding his portfolio with six additional office and apartment projects.


David Scandiffio, President & Chief Executive Officer, CIBC Asset Management

David is responsible for the overall retail and institutional asset management business, as well as the portfolio management team. He is also a key member of CIBC’s Operating Committee and Commercial Banking & Wealth Management Executive Team. Prior to joining CIBC, he was President of IA Clarington Funds and Executive Vice President, Industrial Alliance Life Insurance Company where he was responsible for the wealth distribution and asset management businesses, including high net-worth segments. He serves on the Board of Directors at The Investment Funds Institute of Canada and holds a Bachelor of Science in Actuarial Science and Economics, and is a CFA charter holder.


Dr. Lucas Joppa, Chief Environmental Officer, Microsoft

Dr. Lucas Joppa leads sustainability at Microsoft. In his role, he works to advance Microsoft’s core commitment to sustainability. He founded Microsoft’s AI for Earth program, a five-year, $50 million crosscompany effort dedicated to delivering technology-enabled solutions to global environmental challenges. With a PhD in Ecology from Duke University and extensive publication in top academic journals, such as Science and Nature, Dr. Joppa is a uniquely accredited voice for sustainability in the tech industry. In addition to formerly serving on the Federal Advisory Committee for the Sustained U.S. National Climate Assessment, he also serves on the boards of leading scientific organizations, such as NatureServe and the National Socio- Environmental Synthesis Center. He remains an active scientist and one of Microsoft’s foremost AI thought leaders.


Peter Gunning, Global Chief Investment Officer & Chief Executive, Asia-Pacific, Russell Investments

Pete Gunning is the chief executive, Asia-Pacific for Russell Investments where he oversees all business in the Asia-Pacific region, including Japan, Korea, China, Taiwan, Australia and New Zealand. He serves on the Russell Investments Executive Committee. In addition, Gunning is the global chief investment officer where he directs the investment management, implementation and research activities worldwide. Gunning is a member of the Q-Group (Institute of Quantitative Research in Finance Inc.), an organization promoting the use of and interest in quantitative techniques. He is a member of the EDHEC-Risk Institute’s International Advisory Board, and he serves on the Board of Directors for Heart Research Australia and on the Board of Directors for the University of Washington Foster School of Business.


Mary Pugh, Founder, Chief Executive Officer, Chief Investment Officer, Pugh Capital Management

Ms. Pugh co-founded Pugh Capital in 1991 and has 38 years of institutional investment experience. Her vision in establishing Pugh Capital was to create a diverse Seattle-based asset management firm that clients view as a trusted partner. The firm began with $5 million in assets under management and one client, and now manages $6.6 billion on behalf of its clients. Ms. Pugh is a member of the International Women’s Forum, President of the Scholarship Fund for Rainier Scholars and President of the Greater Seattle Chapter of the Links. She is also a member of the Washington State Investment Board. In 2018, she was honored with the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco’s Fed Family Distinguished Service Award. In 2017, she received the Seattle Storm Inspiring Women Award and she was honored with Seattle Business Magazine 2016 Executive Excellence Award as a CEO of the Year. Ms. Pugh graduated from Yale University with a B.A. in Economics.


Tom Alberg, Co-Founder, Managing Director, Madrona Venture Group

Tom is a co-founder of Madrona and actively works in support of Madrona and its portfolio companies. Tom is a director for Impinj, a former Madrona Portfolio Company that is now a public company. Tom has served on the boards of numerous public and private companies and is a director of Amazon.com on which he has served since before it went public in 1997. Tom is co-chair of ACES Northwest Network and serves on the boards of TechNet Northwest, the Pacific Science Center, and Challenge Seattle. He was formerly a member of President Obama’s National Advisory Council on Innovation and Entrepreneurship. He is also on the Investment Committee of the Seattle Foundation. He was also one of the principal participants in the development of the Four Seasons Hotel in downtown Seattle.


Heather Redman, Co-Founder, Managing Partner, Flying Fish Partners

Heather is Co-Founder & Managing Partner at Flying Fish Partners, a venture firm investing in artificial intelligence, machine learning and robotics companies. She serves on the boards of Beneficial State Bank, Yesler, Inc., Coldstream Holdings Inc., Greater Seattle Metropolitan Chamber, Technology Alliance, Forterra and as a Regent of the Washington State University. She serves on the executive committee of the Global EIR Coalition, the governing advisory board of the Hawthorn Club, the Connector Board of NCWIT, the advisory board of iInovate and as a mentor at Techstars. Prior to her current roles, Heather was Executive and Senior Vice President at Indix, Summit Power, Atom Entertainment, Getty Images and PhotoDisc. Heather’s law degree is from Stanford and her BA is from Reed. Heather speaks and appears in the press frequently.


J. Cooper Abbott, Chairman, President, Carillon Tower Advisers

Mr. Abbott is chairman and president of Carillon Towers Advisers, a global multi-boutique, multi-channel asset manager with $64 billion in AUM. He is responsible for development and execution of strategy, organic/acquisitive growth and the cultivation of firm-wide culture focused on client-investment outcomes. His insights on various investment related topics have appeared in a range of publications and broadcast outlets, including CNBC, WSJ, Institutional Investor, Fox Business and others. Mr. Abbott earned a B.A. with highest honors from Brown University and an MBA from the Wharton School of Business.


Nancy Zevenbergen, Founder, President, Chief Investment Officer, Zevenbergen Capital investments

Ms. Zevenbergen established ZCI in 1987, creating a responsive research-focused investment firm. Currently Ms. Zevenbergen oversees the firm’s investment policy and portfolio management decisions, maintaining a strong commitment to original research. She graduated from the University of Washington, earning a BA in Business Administration with a concertation Finance, is a CFA charter holder and a member of both the CFA Institute and the CFA Society of Seattle. Ms. Zevenbergen serves as an Independent Trustee of the Smead Funds Trust. Furthermore, she serves on the Seattle Pacific Foundation Board of Directors as chair of the Investment Committee, and is a member of the University of Washing Foster School of Business Advisory Board.


Olivia Albrecht, Global Head of ESG Business Strategy, PIMCO

Ms. Albrecht is a member of the Executive Office in Newport Beach as the head of PIMCO's ESG (environmental, social and governance) business strategy. Previously, she led the firm's global fixed income business within the product strategy group. Prior to joining PIMCO in 2011, she worked in private equity at Cerberus Capital Management in Frankfurt, Germany. She has also held positions at Lockheed Martin, Mubadala Development Corporation in Abu Dhabi, UAE, and the U.S. Department of Defense. She holds an MBA from Columbia Business School, along with a master's degree from Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs and an undergraduate degree from Princeton University. Ms. Albrecht was a member of the Big Brothers, Big Sisters Orange County Board of Directors from 2012–2014.


Patrick Callahan, Founder, Chief Executive Officer, Urban Renaissance Group

As Founder and CEO, Patrick Callahan drives the vision, strategy and overall direction at Urban Renaissance Group (URG), a full-service commercial real estate operating company with an operating platform of approximately 8.5 million square feet, over 150 employees and approximately $4.0 Billion of assets under management. Since founding URG in Seattle, Washington in 2006, Patrick has guided the team in delivering six NAIOP award winning projects and Touchstone was named NAIOP National Developer of the Year in 2016. Patrick is deeply involved within Seattle real estate, civic and professional organizations. He is a Global Trustee and member of the Transit Oriented Development council with Urban Land Institute. At Downtown Seattle Association, Pat serves as Chair of the Urban Experience Committee and Executive Committee Member on the Board of Directors.


Ian Toner, Chief Investment Officer, Verus

Mr. Toner is the CIO for Verus. He is responsible for the portfolio management team, strategic research team, and both the public and private markets teams and is also a member of the Verus management committee. Mr. Toner has a degree in Law from the University of Oxford in the United Kingdom and is a CFA charter holder. He is a regular author and speaker on a range of investment topics. He is a member of the Audit / Finance Committee of The Medina Foundation in Seattle. He is also a member of the CFA Institute and the CFA Society of Seattle. Mr. Toner is a trustee of Charles Wright Academy, an independent co-educational school based in University Place, WA, where he also sits on the finance and endowment committees. He is also a board member at the Seattle Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce, where he co-chairs the finance & audit committee.


Bonnie Wongtrakool, J.D., Global Head of ESG Investments, Western Asset Management

Bonnie M. Wongtrakool is the Global Head of ESG Investments and a Portfolio Manager at Western Asset Management Company, which she joined in 2003. Ms. Wongtrakool leads and oversees the firm's ESG research, engagement, strategies, and portfolios. She also appears frequently in the media, representing Western Asset's views on the markets as well as ESG. Prior to her ESG leadership role, Ms. Wongtrakool served as a Portfolio Manager for mortgage and structured products. Ms. Wongtrakool is a Phi Beta Kappa and honors graduate of both Harvard College and Harvard Law School, and obtained her CFA designation in 2005.


Kenneth Heinz, President, Hedge Fund Research, Inc.

Kenneth J. Heinz, CFA is the President of Hedge Fund Research, Inc. (HFR) and is a leading authority on the global hedge fund industry. Mr. Heinz manages HFR's industry leading hedge fund index business, including the HFRI, HFRX and HFRU Indices. Mr. Heinz has provided specialized consulting services to the industry's most significant institutional investors globally and has worked directly with thousands of managers, including many of the industry's most influential firms. Max Darnell, Managing Partner, Chief Investment Officer, First Quadrant

Max Darnell has served as First Quadrant's Managing Partner since 2012, and Chief Investment Officer since 2002. Max is responsible for setting the strategic direction of the firm, and for overseeing the firm's investment products with emphasis on strategic research and development initiatives. Max began his career at First Quadrant in 1991, managing derivatives research throughout the decade. In 2000 he was named Director of Research. Max earned a Master's degree in Economics from the University of California, Los Angeles, in 1991.


Jason Malinowski, Chief Investment Officer, Seattle City Employees’ Retirement System

Jason Malinowski, CFA, is the Chief Investment Officer of the Seattle City Employees’ Retirement System. Prior to joining the City of Seattle in October 2014, he was a Managing Director at BlackRock, serving as the Head of Risk and Quantitative Analysis for Alternative Investments. His service with the firm began in 2003, including his years at Quellos Group LLC, a boutique firm specializing in alternative investments that was acquired by BlackRock in 2007. At Quellos, Jason was an Associate Director and Head of Quantitative Research. Jason received a BA in Economics and Mathematics from New York University and a MA in Policy Studies at the University of Washington, Bothell.


Eli Pars, CFA, Co-CIO, Head of Alternative Strategies and Co-Head of Convertible Strategies, Senior Co-Portfolio Manager, Calamos Investments

As a Co-Chief Investment Officer, Eli Pars is responsible for oversight of investment team resources, investment processes, performance and risk. As Head of Alternative Strategies and Co-Head of Convertible Strategies, he manages investment team members and has portfolio management responsibilities for those investment verticals. He is a member of the Calamos Investment Committee, which is charged with providing a top-down framework, maintaining oversight of risk and performance metrics, and evaluating investment process. Eli has 32 years of industry experience, including 11 at Calamos. Prior to returning to Calamos in 2013, he was a Portfolio Manager at Chicago Fundamental Investment Partners, where he co-managed a convertible arbitrage portfolio. Previously, he held senior roles at Mulligan Partners LLC, Ritchie Capital and SAM Investments/The Hampshire Company. Earlier in his career, Eli was a Vice President and Assistant Portfolio Manager at Calamos. He received a B.A. in English Literature from the University of Illinois and an M.B.A. with a specialization in Finance from the University of Chicago Graduate School of Business.
